Coping with hypoxia at high altitude:
How lung, blood and brain respond and crosstalk
San Pedro de Atacama – Chile, March 4-9, 2018.
Dear Colleague,
It is our pleasure to invite you to join a high-altitude conference to be held in the breathtaking Atacama Desert (Northern Chile) as of March 4-9, 2018, in San Pedro de Atacama(about 2400 m asl).
With the help of the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI) and other institutions, the organizers (E. Herrera, Chile; M. Gassmann, Switzerland and N. Weissmann, Germany) have chosen one of the most interesting places on Earth for this unique translational scientific conference: the Atacama Desert. The city of San Pedro de Atacama is located at about 2400 m above sea level, not too far away from the border to Bolivia. Naturally, in the Andes there is a vast experience in altitude-related medical problems as well as a longstanding tradition of research in high altitude physiology and medicine. The congress location can be reached by a convenient taxi drive within <1h from Calama Airport. The political situation is very calm and the area very friendly. Most countries will not need a visa to enter Chile.
There are several activities programmed during the meeting that include sightseeing of the wonderful landscapes and a visit to the ALMA observatory located at 5000 m asl or the ALMA base camp that is located much lower.
We really do hope that you can join us for this once in a lifetime experience, to discuss high-altitude physiology and medicine surrounded by the Andean mountains.
With warm regards
Emilio, Max & Norbert
