Every two years, ISME celebrates the achievements of scientists who have substantially advanced the field of microbial ecology. An award is presented for each stage of a scientist’s career. We encourage our membership to nominate individuals worthy of winning one of our three prestigious awards.
If you know of outstanding members of the community worthy of an ISME Society Award, please fill in the nominations ballot by Friday 31 January 2025. Note that your nomination needs to be seconded by another ISME member.
The Awards and their eligibility
The Jim Tiedje Award recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to microbial ecology. Nominees are still active in the field and have been for at least 30 years.
The Winogradsky Award recognizes mid-career scientists who have substantially advanced the field of microbial ecology. The award recognises outstanding contributions to microbial ecology including the development of novel techniques, proposing and advancing ecology theories and establishing new disciplines within the field. Nominees must be active researchers 10-25 years post PhD.
The Alma Dal Co Award recognizes early career microbial ecologists who have made significant contributions to this field. Nominees are no more than 10 years post PhD.
After the deadline of 31 January 2025, the ISME Awards Committee will select three finalists per award. Subsequently, the Executive Board will choose the winner out of the proposed finalists by anonymous vote.
The winners will be given the opportunity to present their work as keynote speakers at the 20th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology, which will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, in August 2026.
The winners will be announced in mid-2025.
Make sure to submit your suggestions by 31 January 2025.
