First talk titles announced for Emerging Application of Microbes

Dear colleague,

To discuss the latest research and developments in the field of microbiology VIB is organizing the first edition of  ‘Emerging applications of microbes’ on June 3 – 4 2019 in beautiful Leuven Belgium.

The new breakthroughs and technologies in microbiology do not only allow a better basic understanding of microbes and life in general, they also open new routes in applied and industrial microbiology.

Packed program offers insight in the direction of microbe research

Scientific program almost complete

The program will be divided in four sessions covering metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, industrial biotechnology, microbial communities. With the program almost complete, the first presentation titles of the speakers were announced.

You can find some of them below, and all on the conference website.

David Berry, University of Vienna, AT
Exploring microbial communities using single-cell isotope probing

Jef Boeke, NYU Langone Health, US
The Dark Matter Project

Francesca Ceroni, imperial College London, UK
Development of synthetic biology tools to investigate cellular burden in bacteria and engineer more robust gene expression

Angela E. Douglas, Cornell University, US
Insect Microbiomes: Biomedical model and target for insect pest control

Morten Sommer, Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability DK
Using synthetic biology to manage bacteria

Dan Jarosz, Stanford University, US
Using microbes to map drivers of phenotypic change: within and between species

Teresa Teixeira, CNRS, FR
How telomeres control cell proliferation: lessons from budding yeast

Jens Nielsen, Chalmers University, SE
Metabolic engineering of yeast for production of fuels and chemicals

Karen Polizzi, Imperial College London, UK
Genetically-encoded biosensors for bioprocess development

Sam Possemiers, ProDigest BVBA, BE
Development of an oral Live Biotherapeutic Product for IBD: exploiting microbiome expertise to accelerate clinical development

The program also features Christina Smolke (Stanford, US), Jack Pronk (TU Delft, NL), Marjan De Mey (Ghent University, BE), Eric Alm (MIT, US), Narendra Maheshri (Organism Engineer, Ginkgo Bioworks, US).

Submit your abstract before 1 April & win the poster prize!

Nature Reviews Microbiology sponsored Poster Prize

To support junior researchers, VIB offers PhD students a special rate when registering before the Early Bird deadline. We also encourage young scientists to showcase their own research to the international research community during the poster sessions at the conference. The best abstracts will be selected for an oral presentation and the best poster will be rewarded with a poster prize made possible by Nature Reviews Microbiology!

We look forward to welcoming you in Leuven on 3 – 4 June 2019!

With kind regards,
Kevin Verstrepen
